Today I took a little visit to the University of Central Arkansas Department of Communication Awards Ceremony. It was my first time visiting an award ceremony, and it was a awesome new experience. The ceremony was hosted by my Public Relation teacher Dr. Riva Brown, and she did an amazing job. The ceremony was held in the Grand Foyer in Thompson Hall, where all of the communication classes are held.
The ceremony started off with Dr. Brown giving a run down on how everything is going to go. After the run down speech Mr. Terry Wright, Dean, read off students on the student recognition list. Once the student recognition list was read, Dr. Brown came back and read off all the members in the Public Relations Student Society of America. I found out my classmate Stephanie Higginbotham was recently elected as president of the PRSAA chapter at UCA.
My argumentative advocacy teacher Dr. Monika Alston-Miller then came up and talked about her chapter Lambda Pi Eta. It was very interesting to hear about what she had to say about the chapter, and the different work they do. The ceremony also showed me different groups with in the communication department. For example their is a Forensics (debate team) which is lead by Dr. Anthony McMullen. Hey explained how they are ranked nationally and are working hard. Next Dr. J.J. McIntyre came up and talked about his Collaborative Crisis Communication Project. He talked about how his crisis class works on real life problems such as a bomb going off on campus. All very interesting communication courses I have not heard about.
Once all of the major organizations were read off, Dr. Nelle Bedner came up to read off the list of graduating seniors. After everybody applauded for the graduating students, each professor came back up to present awards for best members of the year. It was a very exciting and promising ceremony. I am very happy to have attended such a professional event, and see my PR classmates when awards.
